On June 30th Pro-Enrich partners Food & Bio Cluster Denmark and Natac Biotech held a pre-market stimulation webinar (the first out of four) directed towards the cosmetics, neutraceuticals and animal feed industries about the work done in the project on extraction of valuable components from citrus and tomato biomass.
Louise Krogh Johnson, dissemination manager in the Pro-Enrich project, presented the project and Jose Maria Pinilla, project manager from Natac Biotech, gave the participants some interesting insights into the work they have done on extraction of lycopene from tomato biomass and hesperidine from citrus fruit biomass – both residues from production of e.g., juice, ketchup, and soup.
Natac Biotech is a company engaged in researching, developing, manufacturing and marketing ingredients of natural origin, mainly plant extracts, and they have extensive experience with this kind of work. Jose explained what kind of valuable compounds these biomasses contain and what purposes can serve in various products. He also touched upon some of the challenges involved, like stabilising the biomass before transport and use.
