In the Pro-Enrich project we have made a public perception study of bio-based/natural products and alternative proteins in recognition of the fact that the transition to a more bio-based economy with less or no dependence on petrochemicals and animal husbandry is very much a question of consumer acceptance.
To succeed we need consumers to choose these products over the conventional ones, even if it sometimes is a slightly more expensive option.
Our study titled ‘A study of consumer perceptions of biorefined products from side streams in Denmark, Germany, Spain, and Poland’ is focused on four product categories: food, pet food, cosmetics and furniture. Some of the results were quite surprising. For example, that while a majority is positive towards bio-based products, approximately half of the respondents do not think they have personal experience with them. The concept ‘bio-based’ appears to be very abstract to many and companies should keep this is mind in their marketing of these types of products. There were also significant national differences in the attitudes towards these types of products across the four countries. Another finding – maybe less surprising - is that knowledge about the negative effects of meat consumption on the environment, does not equal a change in behaviour. We also asked about people’s openness to various alternative protein sources and several other things.
